Palm Sunday

Palm Branches to the Cross

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble  and mounted  on  a  donkey, on a colt, the  foal  of  a  donkey. Zechariah 9:9

The book of Zechariah has the largest number of messianic messages (about Messiah) among the Minor prophets. His messages and visions all occurred about 500 BC.

His Triumphal Entry

John 12:12-15 The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel! And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!” Remember, this is about 500 years later.

There were actually two processions into Jerusalem that day. Roman historians record that the governor of Judea, Pontius Pilate, led a procession of Roman cavalry and centurions into Jerusalem that same day. Quite different, as you can imagine, the two processions would be. The Roman army with bows, shields, and spears. Jesus with his disciples, had no earthly weapons.

Pilate, as governor of the region, knew that it was customary for the Roman governor of a foreign territory to be in its capital for religious celebrations. Pilate had to be there. This was, of course, all planned out by God from the beginning of time.

This is just a very brief history of Palm Sunday. Very brief. So much occurred in the next few days that it would be impossible to cover it all here. But we will, in a few sentences try to cover the highlights.

These highlights can all be found in John chapters 12 thru 18.

Jesus tells how He will die, and that He will draw all people to himself.

Jesus came to save the world. And I know this commandment is eternal life.

Jesus washes the Disciples’ feet. Do you understand what I have done to you?

Jesus said one of you will betray me. What you are going to do, do quickly.

Jesus gave a new commandment. Love one another as I have loved you.

Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father but thru me.

Jesus promises the Holy Spirit. Gives us another Helper, to be with us forever.

Jesus tells of the work of the Holy Spirit. He will guide you into all truth.

Jesus has overcome the world. In the world tribulation, in Jesus peace.

Jesus prays for Himself, the disciples, and all believers.

Jesus is betrayed and arrested. Shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?

I hope you will take time today to read these six chapters.

Have a blessed Palm Sunday and make it a great week!
